"Busójárás End-of-Winter Celebration"

Dear readers, I haven't posted anything since my first post last year, probably because I came back Spain and put an end of my UK travelling. Unfortunately I still can't afford to travel around, but I came across this unusual carnival celebration called Busójárás and I thought it's worth sharing it with you.

Busójárás is only celebrated in Mohács, Budapest in the end of the carnival season. Although is a tradition established by Croatians, known as "Sokac", who arrived in Mohács ten years after the Turkish army was defeated.

The feast is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity from 2009 from the UNESCO.

The Busós, horned wooden masked men in sheep-wool costumes, arrive in row boats on the Danube waters making noise with cowbells and horns as an attempt to scare off winter and welcome Spring season. This takes place the last day of the Carnival season. As the night falls a coffin, symbolizing winter, is burnt surrounded by the villagers dancing around the bonfire.

As in every feast, there can't be lack of food and drink, we can find hungarian bakon called "szalonna" on bread with onions and peppers, "fánk", deep fired dough and "pálinka" a fruite brandy.

Here you have a nice web where you can explore more about the emblematic Mohács and the anual celebration of this particular feast.
